As he was about to cut his last head, Lord Shiva appeared, moved by his bhakti. Shiva cured Ravana’s injuries by applying medicine and thus came to be known as Vaidya (doctor) – giving the temple its name Baidyanath.
It is believed that the Shiva Lingam was installed by Ravana himself, making it extremely powerful. This sacred site is also associated with the Shakti Peethas, as the heart of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen here.
