According to legends, Ravana, the mighty king of Lanka, was a devoted worshiper of Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him a boon and gave him one of the Jyotirlingas to carry back to Lanka, with a condition that it should not be placed on the ground. During the journey, Ravana felt the need to relieve himself and handed the lingam to a shepherd boy (Lord Vishnu in disguise), who placed it on the ground. Since then, the Jyotirlinga got established at Aundha Nagnath and became a revered place of worship.
